Neck Pain Q & A

What is neck pain?

Simply stated, neck pain is any pain you feel in your neck. The pain can be excruciating and sharp or numbing and dull. In either case, if you’re experiencing any strange sensations in your neck or pain that radiates down your arm or shoulder, you need to schedule an appointment with Dr. Sahni.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can develop from a number of causes. Common causes of neck pain include:

  • Muscle strain
  • Herniated disc
  • Cervical stenosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Infection

Neck pain can also develop after an injury that has forced your head into an unexpected back-and-forth motion, such as when you’re in a car accident. This injury is referred to as whiplash and can cause damage to the soft tissue in your neck.

How is neck pain diagnosed?

Dr. Sahni can determine the cause of your neck pain after an examination, review of your medical history, and a discussion of your symptoms. To help him identify the cause of your neck pain, it’s important to provide details of when the pain started and the types of symptoms you’re experiencing.

To confirm a diagnosis, Dr. Sahni may recommend additional testing, such as an MRI or X-ray. If he suspects nerve involvement, he may also recommend nerve testing to assess for damage, which may help direct his treatment plan.

How is neck pain treated?

Dr. Sahni wants nothing more than for you to get back to doing the things you love, and he develops a treatment plan aimed at reducing your symptoms and restoring function. While he is a skilled surgeon, surgery may not be his first recommendation for your neck pain.

Your treatment plan may include more conservative therapies, such as:

  • Anti-inflammatories and over-the-counter pain medication
  • Activity modification
  • Steroid injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic care
  • Acupuncture

Surgery is rarely recommended for neck pain. But if conservative treatments fail to relieve your neck pain, Dr. Sahni may suggest a surgical procedure aimed at alleviating the root cause of your pain. Dr. Sahni specializes in minimally invasive spinal surgeries, which reduce your scarring, pain, and recovery time.
